How to Automatically Turn Off Slack Notifications After Hours

My hours after work are precious, and nothing is more annoying than hearing the familiar slack thump interrupting my afternoon nap. (I’m not sixty, I just wake up very early for work.)

While my colleagues at Lifehacker are generally good at staying away from Slack, when we’re all done for the day or the weekend – apart from Joel , who I’m not sure is actually asleep – you might find yourself in a work environment where everything is simple. banging their heads off no matter how long. If you’re tired of getting Slack notifications every time someone has something to say outside of business hours, there are a few quick fixes you can use to limit your notifications.

Slack’s final feature is a “notification schedule,” which allows you to set – for the day – the hours at which you would like to let Slack bother you about things. I find this to be more useful than the Do Not Disturb setting in Slack, which was previously used to disable notifications when I know I will be unavailable.

To set up a notification schedule for the desktop version of the Slack app, launch it and click the arrow next to your workspace name. Hover your mouse over Pause Notifications and click Set Notification Schedule that appears in the expanded menu.

Click on the dropdown that is currently populated with “Every day” and you will be able to specify that you want to receive notifications only on weekdays or through any custom schedule you want to set up. This is what the latter looks like:

Remember that you choose the hours and days when you want to receive notifications, not block them.

If you’re using iOS or Android , you’ll find the same setting by tapping You at the bottom of the screen, then Notifications> Schedule Notifications (under General Settings).

Do not disturb settings should take precedence over the schedule of notifications, so you can still block all notifications from the work week you are on vacation if you wish. Set it up as not to disturb, rather than edit the notification schedule, so that everything is set up just the way you like it when you return.
