Support These Black-Owned Coffee and Tea Plants
Even if you’re used to – and loyal – to a particular chain of coffee shops, it might be a good idea to broaden your horizons and try a local independent coffee shop. And while you’re at it, why not make it a black-owned business? If you’re looking for a new coffee or tea spot in your area (or know where to go when you end up driving again), here are a few of the many black-owned coffee shops around the country.
Sip and taste, Chicago
This mini-chain Windy City not only stocks fair trade certified coffees from around the world, but also a wide selection of teas, mochas, lattes and mixed drinks. Southside Chicago has four locations in Bronzeville, Hyde Park, Rosenwald, and South Loop.
Venture North, Minneapolis
Venture North isn’t just a coffee shop: it’s also a bike shop. If that wasn’t enough, this is another nonprofit organization that helps empower youth in the community through cycling programs, activities, and jobs.
AT Oasis Coffee & Tea Shop, Phoenix
This shop sells small-scale Ethiopian coffee as well as smoothies, milkshakes and ready-made snacks.
Uncle Bobby’s Coffee and Books, Philadelphia
Although the coffee part of this business is currently closed, you can still order books and other merchandise through their website to keep it afloat until it can start serving Java again.
Backatown Coffee, New Orleans
If you like coffee, jazz and al fresco dining, Backatown Coffee is a great choice. There is free Wi-Fi, so when things reopen, this could be a great place to work.
Coffy Café, Washington DC
Besides coffee and tea, Coffy Café is also famous for its crêpes. And while you can’t enjoy them in person right now, they are available for delivery.
Brooklyn Perk, New York
If you find yourself in Brooklyn and want to drink coffee, this is the place for you. Want something different? The menu has everything from red velvet coffee to banana latte with almond milk and something called “unicorn” (made with matcha, red shiso and apple).
Other places
This is just a tiny example of black-owned coffee shops and tea shops in the country. There are several other ( more complete ) lists worth checking out. Maybe you will find a new favorite place.
