Check Out the New Crayola “Colors of the World” Crayons
With race at the center of the nation’s conversation, Crayola finally provides children with more than a few colors to choose from as they paint self-portraits, family portraits, and photographs of their friends. Crayola calls the set ” Colors of the World ” and is now available for pre-order.
You may remember that Crayola launched its first line of ” multicultural pencils ” in the early 1990s. It was a box of eight crayons from a standard set; colors such as peach, brown and mahogany, plus black and white crayons for “mixing”. This is not it. This is a set of 24 colored pencils (plus eight other classic eye and hair colors) that were developed in collaboration with Victor Casale, former Chief Chemist and Managing Director of MAC cosmetics and currently CEO of MOB Beauty.
“Finding the right shade has been my goal throughout my career,” says Casale in a promotional video for the crayons launch.
Children can now choose from very light gold, medium deep pink and deep almond colors to create their portraits. Kat Bowen writes for Romper what this means for families, especially multiracial ones:
From a multicultural family, this box literally contains crayons for everyone in my family, from my Chinese husband to my Jamaican son-in-law, to my Puerto Rican nephews, and even my own almost translucent Slavic mountain hue. There is a color for all of us that will no doubt be used by my daughter, who is rarely seen without a sketch pad and crayons, and who in the past has solved all of us Picassos with various neon skin tones because flesh tones did not fit.
You can pre-order the Colors of the World crayons and coloring book from Walmart; both will depart on July 5th.
