Bring These Snacks to Your Next Protest
Protests and demonstrations can be intense events with a lot of running and shouting, but most of the time in one of them you will spend walking, standing and singing. These events can last for hours, and hours of walking, standing, singing and (at times) running can leave a person very hungry. This is why protest snacks are so necessary.
I know snacks might not seem like the hottest topic of discussion right now, but feeling hungry and tired can mean you’re not alert and you really need to be on the lookout for these things, which can get pretty serious at any moment. Given the outpatient nature of the protests, your snacks should be non-perishable, light, portable, and (ideally) nutrient-dense. If you’re planning on sharing, a individually wrapped snack is probably a good option; we are still in the midst of a pandemic and people might want to wipe the packaging with a disinfectant wipe. (It’s also a good idea to bring some peanut-free options with you in case other protesters have allergies.)
Basically, pack as if you were going on a very stressful excursion. If you need suggestions, consider small oranges (which are naturally wrapped), muesli / nut / protein bars, dried fruit, trail mix, individual tubes of nut butter, packs of crackers or cookies, fruit snacks, jerky or meat sticks (these are make some freaky Slim Jims now), chocolate-covered espresso beans, and gummy candy. Some are quite sweet, but sugar is energy and candy is joy, and it’s okay to send joy in a serious event.
Also, bring a small plastic bag for trash and wrappers, and do n’t bring any utensils with you as you don’t want to be caught with anything that could be used as a weapon. Hand sanitizer or wipes are also helpful because, again, we are still in the midst of a pandemic, but eating with clean hands is a practice we must follow at all times.
