Your Child Could Become a Junior Home Fire Chief

For over 70 years, Hartford Insurance Group has been teaching children to become junior fire chiefs – and now that so many children are out of school during the pandemic, the company has created an online learning academy to keep children in school. about fire safety from the safety of your own home.

According to The Hartford, the Junior Fire Marshal Training Academy has designated more than 111 million children as “junior fire marshals” to date, and children can now complete the training program – with your help – at home. Alllesson materials are downloadable and printable, including an introductory journal, cards, worksheets, home fire escape plans, and other action sheets.

At the academy, children will learn four basic safety lessons :

  • Matches and lighters for adults
  • Smoke alarms are important
  • Families should develop an escape plan and put it into practice.
  • Families should find a meeting place outside the home.

Each lesson can be completed in about 20 minutes (or longer, depending on how passionate and engaged the child is in the curriculum) and can be split over several days or completed all at once.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, after they have completed the introduction and all four lessons, you can print and fill out their official certificate of completion stating that they have successfully completed the program and are indeed a junior fire marshal.
