Fernet and Orange Liqueur Is a Fantastic Pair for Whiskey

Now that I’m away from Campari, I’m forced to explore long-neglected corners of my bar cart. Things are not entirely bleak: there are a lot of bottles left, but these are the bottles that I don’t take very often. This led me to googling a lot, which led to the discovery of new cocktails, so overall this is a positive result.

One such discovery is Old Timber, a Stirred Whiskey cocktail from Salt House, written by Maggie Hoffman for Serious Eats . A cozy drink with an almost autumnal atmosphere. I know it is technically spring, but this week seemed gray . Maggie uses rye, Fernet Leopold and Triple Sec, but I didn’t have those particulars. Turns out bourbon, Fernet-Vallet and Dry Curaçao are great too, so don’t get hung up on the brands, especially during these times. To make this sweet and savory whiskey drink, you’ll need:

  • 2 ounces whiskey (bourbon or rye)
  • 1/4 ounce orange liqueur (1/2 ounce if using Dry Curaçao)
  • 1/4 ounce fernet (all you have)

Pour everything into a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until cool. Drain the water into a low bowl with a large rock and enjoy.
