MoMA Now Offers Free Online Art Lessons
Although the New York Museum of Modern Art is now closed to the public, its virtual doors are open in the form of several free lessons from the museum.
MoMA offers nine free lessons on Coursera :
- Fashion as design
- In the studio: post-war abstract painting
- What is contemporary art?
- Arts and Ideas: Learning with Themes
- Arts and Research: Museum Teaching Strategies for Your Classroom
- Viewing Photos
- Arts and Activities: Interactive Strategies for Interacting with Art
- Contemporary art and ideas
- Shaying (taught in Chinese)
Classes take 12 to 38 hours and can be done at any speed.
All classes are theoretical rather than practical, as you will learn more about how to appreciate contemporary art than how to create it.
If you have an interest in art; however, then taking a two-person course can be an enjoyable experience as long as they all spend a little more time indoors and away from museums.
