Keep Paying for Gym Membership If You Can
Your gym is probably closed. (Even if you don’t, you probably shouldn’t go – gyms are the perfect place to be around other people and touch things other people touch.) So you might be tempted to cancel your membership. But if you can afford it, consider continuing like this.
Now, if you go to a large commercial gym that you were about to cancel anyway, I won’t try to change my mind. And if you yourself have financial problems, do whatever you need to do to stay afloat. But if your membership supports a small business that you would like to survive, keep in mind that many gym owners are intimidated that they won’t be able to reopen if a lot of people give it up.
Meanwhile, many are posting workouts online to keep members active and to give their employees a few billable hours. Since everything goes online these days, you may find that your favorite trainers and coaches can continue to train you remotely and can adapt their training plans to the equipment (if available) in your home. Check your gym’s social media to see what they have to offer.
Whether to undo the cancellation is a personal decision. If your own hours have been shortened, do what you need to do. But if you’re still getting a steady paycheck, do whatever you can to support the businesses you would like to reopen when this is over.
