How to Enable Dark Mode for the Google Play Store App

Google is releasing a dark theme switcher for the Play Store this week, and most devices running Android 9 and 10 will be able to use it. This new setting will force the Play Store to always use a dark theme, no matter what default Android theme you have installed. There are also options to make the application always use the light theme, or change it depending on your system theme – your choice!

Here’s how to find and change the new Google Play dark mode settings:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon with three rows of strings to the left of the search bar.
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.
  4. Tap Subject.
  5. Select the option you want; choosing “Light” or “Dark” will force the app to always use this theme, while the third option will replace the theme depending on your phone’s current settings ( “Installed with Battery Saver Mode” in Android 9 or “System Default” in Android 10).

Google Play isn’t the only Android app with its own dark mode switch. Similar settings exist for Gmail , the Google search app , WhatsApp , Twitter , Instagram , Facebook Messenger, and more – and don’t forget about Android 10’s universal dark theme setting, which forces (most) Android apps to use dark mode when available.
