Don’t Forget “forward Spring” Tonight for Summer Time
Most of the United States will jump ahead by an hour this weekend. At 2:00 am on Sunday, almost all states immediately switch clocks to 3:00 am. This means that you will potentially lose an hour of sleep.
We’ll stick with that time until November 1, when the clock drops at 2am and we’ll all get that extra hour of sleep back.
If your smartphone is set to automatically detect the time, then tonight it should change by itself. This means you don’t have to spend a ton preparing for that front.
If you have any wristwatches, you can go ahead and adjust them now, or make a mental list of the clocks you need to adjust in the morning.
If you are having trouble changing the time in the morning, experts recommend avoiding daytime naps and high amounts of caffeine and instead getting outside and getting as much sunlight as possible. Sunlight naturally makes our body wake up and can be a natural way to help you get on your schedule.
Experts also recommend getting up on Sunday at the same time as you, even if you’re tired. While sleeping in that extra hour can be enjoyable right now, you are only setting yourself up for failure the next day.
It’s the same with sleep. Taking a nap in the middle of the day can disrupt your circadian rhythm and ultimately make it difficult to transition to a “new” time. It’s the same with coffee. While this extra cup in the afternoon can help you get through the day, it can also cause you to sleep a little longer than usual, ultimately hurting your ability to sleep on Sunday night.
