Spend Less Time in DMV by Submitting Your ID Documents Online
Effective October 1, 2020, you will need a valid ID or passport to board any domestic flight in the United States. If you don’t already have one (Real ID will have a gold or black star in the upper right corner), then obtaining one can be a potentially long and painful process.
Since everyone will need a new ID by October, the lines at local DMVs have become quite congested. This week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced an update to the Real ID process that will hopefully reduce wait times a bit: you can now submit your identity information online prior to meeting in person at the DMV. …
You will still have to physically go to the DMV to get this license, but hopefully by agreeing on all your paperwork ahead of time, you will simplify the process and reduce the amount of time you have to spend there. Online filing shortens the time-consuming process of manually scanning, copying and storing paper materials onsite at your local DMV.
DHS made a change based on feedback. While the ability to upload documents to the Internet is now an option, it is also optional. Online filing must be done at the state level, which means your state may or may not decide to offer this option. You will be able to see if your state allows online filing on your state’s DMV website.
