Try New Kitchen Utensils Right After You Move

The worst part of every move is trying to live like a normal person in the box-strewn doorstep between packed and unpacked . But, as it turned out, this annoying time has exactly one positive moment: this is a great opportunity to invest in a new dish for you, because you will have no choice but to use it every day.

I’ve just finished my second cross-country move in three years, and thanks to a nifty delivery drama, my stuff will arrive in a week. So I bought a carbon steel frying pan and scrap knife, none of which I had before to use while the rest of my earthly possessions slowly return to me. Due to the simple fact that I have no cookware other than a rented pot, I had to test both of my purchases in every cooking scenario imaginable. (I also had to learn how to season carbon steel , which is much easier than I thought.) No wonder I’m crazy about my newborn babies and can’t wait to introduce them to the rest. family – but if I was not there, at worst it would be a temporary inconvenience. It was the perfect trial period. That doesn’t mean you have to throw a ton of money on every little device that catches your eye – moving around is expensive enough. For maximum efficiency, whatever you buy should fill a hole in your existing collection, so indulge in a couple of things you’ve wanted for ages, but keep procrastinating for whatever reason. Whether you are trying to learn a completely new skill, such as sharpening knives, or just want to learn how to cook on a cast iron or carbon steel, you’ll know exactly what you think about it, when you unpack the last box.
