These Sonos Products Will Stop Receiving Updates in May
Sonos – an audio brand primarily known for its line of wireless multi-room speakers, music streaming devices and smart speakers – announced today that it plans to end support for several of its older devices in May 2020.
Complete list of legacy devices:
- Sonos Bridge
- Sonos Connect and Connect: Amp (includes all versions released in 2006 from 2015)
- Sonos CR200 Controller
- First Generation Sonos Play: 5 (First released 2009)
- And all Zone Player devices
According to the official Sonos blog post, you will still be able to use these products as before, at least for the foreseeable future, but they will no longer receive firmware or software updates after May. You won’t see any new features or extended compatibility with any devices or apps that are not yet supported – which makes sense given that many of these devices are already 10-15 years old.
However, Sonos is offering its customers a special discount on new speakers if they recycle their old devices.
Users can select any of their Sonos devices to participate in the company’s Trade Up program, which offers up to 30% off your next Sonos purchase. As part of this, you put your old device (s) into ” reuse mode “, which erases all data after 21 days (or immediately if you like) and makes it unusable. This technically protects your data and makes devices more e-cycle-ready, but it’s irreversible, so make sure you’re ready to buy a new speaker and dispose of your old one before going down this route.
