Highlights From Last Night’s Democratic Debate
Last night, six presidential candidates took the stage in Des Moines, Iowa, for the seventh Democratic debate of the 2020 race – and things got awkward. During the debate, the candidates discussed, among other things, rising tensions with Iran, climate change and health care. However, all anyone can say about post-debate is the conversation between Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders at the end of the night (and Tom Steyer, who later became a meme ). Below are a few of the best and worst moments from past nightly Democratic presidential debate in case you missed all the (awkward) action.
Bernie Sanders denied having told Elizabeth Warren that a woman could not win an election.
All eyes are on Bernie Sanders this week after Elizabeth Warren confirmed in a statement Sanders gave her that he does not believe a woman can win the presidency. During the debate, Sanders denied saying this. However, Warren pulled out of the fight and doubled down on her point of view that a woman could win. “I think the best way to talk about who can win is to look at the results of the winners,” she said. “So can a woman beat Donald Trump? Look at the men on this stage. Collectively, they lost 10 elections. The only people on this stage who have won all the elections in which they participated are women … Amy and me. “
Pete Buttigieg answered questions about not being supported by black voters
Throughout most of his campaign, Pete Buttidzic failed to win support from black voters. (According to a recent Washington Post / Ipsos poll , Buttijig received only two percent of support among black Democratic voters surveyed, making it the second-most unfavorable rating among mainstream Democratic presidential candidates.) When asked about his position among black voters, Buttijig responded with “The black voters who know me best support me,” he said. “This is why I have the most support in South Bend. This is why, among the elected black officials in my community who have entered this race, most of them support me. ”
Joe Biden discussed if he will meet with North Korea
Since taking office, President Trump has met several times with Kim Jung Un of North Korea (and became the first incumbent to travel to North Korea). When asked if he would date Jun Eun without any preconditions, Biden replied that he would not and criticized Trump for his actions. “Look … we gave him everything he was looking for, legitimacy,” he said. “The President appeared, met with him, gave him legitimacy, relaxed the sanctions that we have against him … I would not meet with, I quote the“ Supreme Leader, ”who said that Joe Biden is a mad dog, he should be beaten to death with a stick. ” Without wasting a second, Sanders interrupted him. “Besides that, do you like him?”
