How to Explore the Solar System on Google Maps Through Hyperspace
Whatever you may say about the last six Star Wars movies or so, it’s undeniable that zooming through hyperspace to reach distant planets is one of the coolest visuals in the entire series. Now, if 2020 doesn’t get really weird, chances are that humanity won’t make any near-speed travel anytime soon. But now Google Maps can help us make this experience to a small extent with a new hyperspace effect that has been added to the navigation tool’s solar system exploration function. It doesn’t add any more, but it’s a fun excuse to play around with the solar system view if you haven’t done so before.
You will only be able to use the spatial function – and experience hyperspace tunneling – in desktop versions of Chrome, but it’s easy to find and use:
- Go to Google Maps .
- Click the Satellite View button in the lower left corner of the screen.
- Click the tiny Global View button at the top of the navigation controls in the lower-right corner of your browser.
- Use the – key, mouse wheel, or Google Maps’ zoom controls to zoom out until you are in the view of planet Earth.
- Select one of the various planets and moons from the list on the left and you will fly through hyperspace to your new destination. Suitable destinations include Mars (to visit Dr. Manhattan), Europe (to recreate the journey from that 2013 sci-fi movie), and the International Space Station (to say hello to everyone currently traveling our planet).
