Avoid Winter Storm Delays by Changing Your Flight to the Midwest for Free

A violent winter storm is heading for the Midwest. If you happen to be there or are traveling, it may interfere with your travel plans this weekend.

In anticipation of the storm, a number of airlines are offering travel waiver for people traveling to or from the affected areas, or who may have a stopover. Waiver of travel rights will allow you to change your flight for another time without having to pay a change fee.

If this is you and your travel plans are somewhat flexible, you might want to consider changing flights now. The idea here is that flights are likely to be severely delayed or even canceled during the storm. Changing your flight before you leave for the airport can prevent you from spending the day at that airport only to find that you are not going to fly anyway. In other words, you can save yourself a headache if you just trade now.

Delta, United and American are now proposing to stop traveling today and tomorrow. Here is a summary of each offering:

Delta

Delta offers a travel policy waiver if you plan to fly between December 28-29. With their help, you can rebook your flight before January 1, or completely cancel the flight and use the cash for the next flight.

Worth noting: Delta advises that when you go through this process it will initially look like you will be charged a change fee, but that fee will be canceled prior to ordering.

Combined

United is also offering a travel waiver for flights that will operate December 28-29 in the affected cities. In this case, you will need to rebook your ticket in the same cabin as your original ticket, and your new flight will need to operate between the same cities in which it was originally. The ticket you are exchanging must also be purchased by December 26th.
