How to Get Apple Music for Free for Six Months Instead of the Usual Three

If Apple’s three-month free trial for new Apple Music subscribers isn’t enough to get you to give up Spotify, how about a six-month trial?

Thanks to a creative workaround originally found by 9to5Mac , you can use a special Shazam promotion to double the duration of a typical free trial for Apple Music. This is enough time to make a decision – or at least a quick way to save money. As long as you don’t mind reconfiguring your playlists , there is no reason you can’t cancel your current streaming service and enjoy Apple’s six-month streaming experience at home.

Download Shazam for iOS first. Pick it up and use it to define a song – whatever song is playing. When that happens, it should automatically add the song to your Shazam library. Look at the bottom of the result and find a small “Open in Apple Music” button (the word “Apple” has been replaced with a small Apple logo). Click on this.

The screen that comes up seems to give different people different lengths of promotion – some reported a screen that offers a full six-month free trial for Apple Music, others (like me) report four months, which isn’t always four months. I will explain.

When you click the “Try for Free” button, you will be taken to a redemption screen that already has a promotional code. Cross your fingers on this part because your promotion could drop to a meager one month (probably on those who have already signed up to Apple Music at some point, like me). If you’re lucky, you get at least four free months, and maybe even a full six months. As one commentator described :

“I have 6 months on my phone, my daughter is only 1 month old. I never had any Apple Music subscription, which is probably why I got 6 months. In a sentence on my daughter’s phone, it said she would get 4 months, but in the end she only got 1 month. We both went through the same process. I think she used to have a three month trial period. We are in the USA. “

The other person was a little more fortunate , although he probably should n’t :

“6 months for me – I already had Shazam, I used to have 6 months free Apple Music through my carrier. It’s just really interesting because it means I can use my watch with it – frankly, for everything else that Spotify owns Apple Music. ”

Some have even advised that you can cancel your Apple Music subscription – provided it expires before the end of this month – and then use that method to sign up for another free trial. This can give you an extra month; you can get more.

Please be aware that canceling your Apple Music subscription is not enough to qualify in this case. If you opted for an annual subscription, you will not receive immediate cancellation and prorated refunds. Most likely, your subscription will be active until the last day, and most likely, for most people, this will not happen until after eight days.

If you’re an existing Apple Music subscriber and want to try this little loophole, it’s worth giving it a try (if it works). If not, don’t emphasize it. There is always a way to save money from time to time shopping and Apple subscriptions; there will certainly be other deals.
