Use These Transcriptionists Instead of Rev
Like WeWork , Uber , Amazon , YouTube , DoorDash, and all the tech platforms you rely on to live in the 21st century, Rev’s transcription service recently tricked people into doing real work. They have lowered the minimum rate for their contract transcriptionists by 33% to less than $ 5 an hour . Fortunately, there are ways to find and hire a human transcriptionist directly without paying extra money.
I love the Rev platform and have recommended it on this site . But it’s ridiculous to give $ 100 to a platform that only pays a transcriptionist $ 30. Also, I didn’t like the fact that when I post audio, it is available to thousands of people until someone agrees to transcribe it. So I started looking for ways to directly hire transcriptionists.
- Classroom Transcribers : The media and community newsletter lists over 50 transcriptionists with base rates starting at $ 1 per minute. To email them all, send your job description to [email protected]. Or select someone and send an email directly.
- Podcast Resource (Accessibility Tab): Podcasting journalist Will Williams lists a dozen transcriptionists and automated services (see below for more details) with email and Twitter contact information.
- Transcription Network : The transcriptionist writing about Rev’s pay cut created the Transcriptionist Hiring Database, launched on December 2.
Sometimes only an approximate transcription is required for internal use. These automated services are more error prone than human decryptors, especially if the quality of your recording is poor. But they are very useful for automatic notes.
- Otter Voice Meeting Notes : 10 hours per month free; up to 100 hours per month for $ 10 per month. Includes additional features such as keyword tracking and team sharing.
- Cheap transcription : 10 cents / minute
- Temi (owned by the Reverend): 10 cents per minute
- Thrint : $ 48 per month and up
Disgruntled Rev clients are also signing a petition to ask Rev for a pay raise.
Updated 12.03.2019: Marked the launch of the Transcription Network and clarified ownership of Themes.
