From an interview with Joseph Liu
Giving up the fears and perspectives that keep you from changing your career:
Suppose you are confident that it is important for you to keep up with your peers, because that means for you a certain level of status in society. I think it’s important to acknowledge that this is the point of view you hold and play with it a little, almost say … “I don’t care so much what my former colleagues think I will have a new title” … What it might open for you? And almost going through a mental exercise, figuring out that if you were to let go of this belief that is currently dictating and driving your current actions, what could this change for you in your life?
On the importance of saving up before changing careers:
Eat some eggs if possible. And this is important for several reasons: number one, because you accumulate enough savings to give yourself a runway to figure out what you want to do next. On a more practical and subtle level, it also makes you less likely to look like you’re desperate because people can pick up on it. And if you’re desperate looking for a new job, or maybe trying to find your first clients, if you’re starting your own business, that’s not always so good with people. So that savings and cushion gives you the confidence and ability to go out without despairing to accept whatever comes your way.
From a story by Juliet Benavides
On what she learned from her own career transition:
My advice to those who feel that something is not quite right – first of all, pay attention to it and [do not] pay attention to it with the pressure of the need to find out something, but with a kind of soft look at it, [and] I think that inattention to other people is trying to dissuade you. Obviously people are always worried, and I was worried about money. But I found that the less I make decisions out of fear, the more things really open up to me. [] It’s important not to be afraid.
