What to Do If a Google Firmware Update Has Blocked Your Home Speaker
According to numerous reports, a recent firmware update – automatic, of course – killed a number of Google Home and Google Home Mini speakers. It is impossible to say whether it can affect you until you come out firmware update (this is supposed to be, given that these reports appear in September or thereabouts).
If you’re unlucky, your device will show four white lights on its face and more importantly, there is nothing you can do with it. You can try a few easy workarounds to see if you can reanimate your broken smart speaker, including unplugging it for 10 seconds or so and reconnecting it, and trying to do a full factory reset of your device. If none of the options work, your only resource is to contact Google.
As 9to5Google Google recently reported:
“We are aware that a small number of Google Home and Google Home Mini devices are experiencing an issue that causes the device to stop working. We have a fix to prevent the problem from occurring, and we’ll be rolling it out soon. We replace damaged devices. “
What Google isn’t saying is that the company will replace all affected devices regardless of warranty. Don’t let that stop you from getting a brand new smart speaker if yours – through no fault of yours – is completely lost after a wrong firmware update. Please contact Google support and let them know.
