What’s in Store for and Out of Netflix in October 2019
Welcome to October on Netflix, which features a slew of flamboyant originals with huge stars over which some executive is grinding his teeth somewhere, hoping against hope that their multi-million dollar, big-name games will become hits.
Netflix Originals
The big debut of the month – if not your year or your life – is Steven Soderbergh ‘s Laundry (10/18), in which Meryl Streep plays an insurance fraud widow who is involved in the Panama Papers scandal. Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas play a lawyer whose firm finds itself in the middle of a mess. Ah, “laundry” refers to money laundering ! It sounds more exciting than these three hot shots that are cute to each other.
The rest is obviously much less exciting, but other members of the October train with sauce include: Michael B. Jordan’s superhero series Raising Dion (10/4); Rhythm + Flow , an American Idol style hip-hop series rated by Cardi B, TI and Chance the Rapper (10/9); “Existential Comedy” ” Living with Oneself” starring Paul Rudd (10/18); and Dolemite is My Name starring Eddie Murphy as comedy and rap pioneer Rudy Ray Moore, also known as the 1970s Dolemite Phenomenon.
Plus, get ready for the new seasons of Big Mouth , Peaky Blinders, Haunted, Insatiable, Greenhouse Academy, and The Kominsky Method (already?). David Chung has a new series, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, which is a bit like the comedians from Machines Getting Coffee and Pieces of the Unknown , something like Celebrities in Cities Getting Lunch. And Gaten Matarazzo, the acclaimed Stranger of things and equally beloved FiOS ads, for some reason hosts “a terrifying and hilarious prank show” that has already garnered a ton of criticism in the press over the summer.
Cinema!
Least favorite part of large franchises are becoming stronger, including “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” “Men in Black 2,” “Scream 2,” “Superman Returns,” “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.”
In the “classic favorites that go in and out of the Netflix lineup like sweet fog,” we have Trainspotting, The Karate Kid, Cabaret, and Raging Bull.
Comedy!
We have special comedies from Jenny Slate, Arsenio Hall and Nikki Glazer.
Chao, beauties!
Leaving this month: All the President’s Men, Cloverfield, Deliverance, Empire Records, Platoon, Gremlins, Hoosiers, Quiz Show, The Imitation Game, and Pineapple Express.
