Eating Fruits and Vegetables Is More Important Than Eating Organic Foods

All fruits and vegetables are healthy, but when people start talking about how to eat right, the word “organic” comes up all too often.

The difference in health between organic and conventional (non-organic) foods is negligible. There are practically no pesticide residues on both . Nutrient content may vary slightly , but not so much as to significantly affect your diet.

So, if you’ve got the idea that you need to buy organic products to get healthy products for yourself, now you can relax. This is a common misconception. One study found that after learning that some vegetables contain more pesticide residues than others – a message promoted by the Environment Working Group with the intention of encouraging more people to buy organic food – people said they were less likely to buy any fruits or vegetables. Many were shoppers who had previously responded in a survey that cost is a barrier to buying organic fruits and vegetables.

The truth is, almost all of us can eat more fruits and vegetables, no matter if they are organic or not. If you prefer to buy organic, fine, especially if you see it as voting with your dollars for some farming methods over others. (By the way, whether it’s worth doing it at all is a tricky question .) But you’re not putting your health at risk by eating non-organic foods, so go to the grocery aisle and enjoy your favorite foods without feeling guilty.
