Think Pink With Shandy With Campari Thorns

Everyone happy holidays and welcome back to “ Happy Hour with 3 ingredients” , a weekly column drinks, which presents a super-simple but delicious libations. Claire is filming new food content in Los Angeles, which means it’s time for another guest post. This week we’re making the biggest Newton in AA history: a cocktail that includes both cheap beer and Campari .

Since I am a soft, gentle child, I love the shandi. It’s like drinking beer, but more refreshing and half weaker, so I can drink for a second without choking or feeling sleepy. Plus, shandy gives me a cover for drinking ice beer – a practice that I believe should be much more socially acceptable than it actually is. Heavily spaghetti-inspired – a Miller High Life shandy in a bottle with an aperol addition from Baltimore’s Wet City Brewing that I saw on Alex Delaney’s Instagram a few months ago – my favorite drink in the summer of 2019 was equally shitty beer and lemon soda with a little amount of Campari, served with ice. It’s a little tart, a little sweet, bitter in every way, good to swallow, hot pink and icy. In short, the perfect summer drink – and there’s still plenty of time to make it yours.

Any light beer and sour soda will do; my ideal shandy is equal parts Pilsner Urquell and Polar Half and Half. Unfortunately, my beer shop Urquell is offensively overpriced, and I’ve never seen Half and Half south of upstate New York, so I’m sticking with Miller Lite and Limonata. I have no complaints.

Here’s what you’ll need to make the perfect pink shandy to your liking and another one for a friend:

  • 1 12-ounce can or bottle of pilsner, wheat beer, or soft pale ale
  • 1 12 oz can of tart citrus sodas such as San Pellegrino Limonata or Polar Half and Half
  • 1 oz Campari

Fill two 32-ounce cans or beer mugs with ice. Divide the beer and soda evenly between two cans and pour half an ounce of Campari into each. (If drinking alone, reduce Campari to half an ounce and keep half-empty beer and soda cans in the refrigerator for your next drink.) Stir well and share with a friend.
