Use Google to Roll the Dice for Your Favorite Board RPG
If you ever find yourself without a dice bag or feeling lazy, don’t worry. You can go through your Dungeons & Dragons game – or whatever you play – using Google to roll all the dice you want. Yes, even those bizarre bones that have many more sides than what ordinary people are used to seeing.
To get started, just open Google on your computer, laptop or mobile device. In the search bar, enter the type of die you want to roll and the number that Google should roll. At the time of this publication, you had the following dice to choose from:
- d4
- d6
- d8
- d10
- d12
- d20
So, if you want to throw a decently powerful Magic Missile, your character is shooting an angry kobold, you have to type “5d4 + 5” into Google. When you do, you will get a little dice roll animation on the google results page. which shows you the final score. You can then add additional dice (as needed), click any dice to remove their rolls, or adjust the modifier if you make a typo. You can even rewind, and over, and over again if you are trying to cheat a particular outcome or, say, minimize / maximize your new character’s stats in Baldur’s Gate style.
The only downside to Google’s implementation is that you cannot combine bones in the original search query. In other words, you cannot enter “1d4 + 1d8” to get the combined result for these two separate rolls. You need to first find “1d4”, for example, and then click d8 on the results page. to add it.
You will also have to get creative if you roll dice that are not on Google’s list, such as d100. In this case, you will want to search for “2d10” and agree to use the first die as the tens place and the second die as the ones place. If you’ve been RPG’s for a while, this should be familiar territory.
