Clear up the Clutter of Your Home With a “desk Sale”

If you want to get rid of the extra fun of having a yard sale while avoiding the hassle of organizing it, I’ve found the perfect in-between event: invite your friends to the table sale.

Amy Sedaris describes the table sale in an interview with Money , and it’s so smart I can’t wait to get it done.

She uses her dining table as a display case and explains how it works:

As someone who has done many clothing exchanges and more than a few yard sales , I see several advantages to the table-selling model.

You get rid of things

You get rid of the things you don’t use and give your friends the opportunity to collect them before you load the car for the drive to the charity site. In addition, there is a lot of flexibility in what you can unload. Goodwill will not accept an unfinished bottle of flavored vodka or a packet of coffee beans that you open.

You make money

You make some money. Thanks for the dollars (or quarters, or whatever), friends.

This is not just a giveaway to everyone

If something is free, you’re more likely to say, “I bet I’ll find a way to use it.” By assigning value to the items you offer in monetary terms, no matter how small, makes your friends think twice if they really want to bring that item to their home.

You can make it fun

You can spend time with your friends. Toss some cookie dough in the oven, turn on the music, and relax while your friends rummage through your belongings, just a fraction of the judgment of a stranger looking over your front step. Everyone loves a cheap social event, and your wardrobes, dressers and wardrobes will thank you for it.
