Update Your Pet’s Microchip Information Today

It’s wise to get a microchip for your pet so that you can reunite if it ever gets lost, but remember that there is one more step in this plan: updating your information so that whoever finds your pet can actually contact you.

Today is Check the Chip Day , an annual reminder to check your microchip information, make sure it’s up to date, and make an appointment to have your pet chipped if you’ve long wanted to do so.

First, make sure your pet’s chip number and manufacturer are written down in a safe place. Then go to this search tool to find out what information is associated with that microchip number. (Most of the major chips will be viewable in this tool, but Avid will not; you will need to check separately if your brand is yours.) Instructions from there will depend on the brand of the chip. You will likely have to log into an account that you created sometime in the past. Otherwise, whoever finds your pet may try to contact you with old information, so take a moment to update your information – and hope you never have to use it.
