Why You Should Save the Size of Kitchen Counters on Your Phone

The purchase of furniture or decor is driven by need (you need a sofa to sit on so you don’t hurt your back) or desire (I need another deer head on a hanger). You plan ahead to buy what you need , while desires are often impulsive – you’ll find the perfect headboard as you travel through the antique store. To make sure you’re not impulsive – buy a curtain rod that is too long for your windows or a rug that looks like a postage stamp in your living room, keep the dimensions of all your rooms, counters, windows, empty spaces, and even prints and posters on your phone.

Storing the measurements on your phone (in Evernote, the Notes app, or wherever you save the information) allows you to grab this coffee table from the flea market with confidence, the right length for your sofa. See a pair of perfect curtains half-drawn, but worried that your windows are too big? Consult your measurements. See an online offer on Instant Pot or a fancy blender on the Internet but can’t run home from work to measure the depth of your countertops? Consult your measurements. Convinced that you’ve finally found the perfect frame for your oddly shaped Yugoslav punk poster , but not entirely sure due to the aforementioned unusual size? You know what to do.

I’m sure you’re already making a list of things to measure in your head, but just in case, here’s one you can work with:

  • Width, height and depth of cabinets, cupboards and toilets.
  • Sizes of boxes for contact paper, dividers and organizers
  • The width and depth of the shelves, especially the kitchen ones.
  • Sizes of photos, prints and posters you need to hang
  • The dimensions of your current sofa or where you would like to place the sofa in case you find the sofa of your dreams
  • The size of your mattress is not only king or queen, but also its height, as some mattresses these days are very thick and require special sheets.
  • Empty places and corners where you would like to hang or wedge something
  • Windows, including distance from the floor
  • The amount of floor you would like to carpet someday
  • The size of your refrigerator to determine if you can actually pickle a whole brisket in it.
  • Sizes of rooms in your home

These are all sizes I could think of when looking around my own 600-square-foot space, but perhaps those of you with homes have even more. What sizes and dimensions do you think should be added to this list?
