The Best Way to Track Your Kid’s Friends on Your Phone

As a mother of six, my phone is filled with contacts such as Mary Laylas Mom and Dana Maddis Dad. This is how I keep track of my daughter’s new friends and personal assistants who keep track of their schedules (also known as “parents”). This labeling method helps my brain connect adult to child, but it’s awkward and awkward. And poor Mary and Dana will never have their own last names, at least not on my mobile device.

Writer Jordon Dirdal-Roberts shares a better path. On Twitter, he writes: “Free life hack for parents: use the Company slot in your contacts to keep track of which of your kids’ friends are which adults. Saves you from naming people like Mom or Dad X. “

I tested this on iPhone and it works great. In the new contact, I entered my husband’s full name and number, and then listed his company as “Maggie’s dad.” When I asked Siri to “Call Maggie’s dad,” she answered. (I found that you can also list the kid’s friend under “nickname” rather than “company.”) On Android, you’ll only want to list the kid’s friend under “nickname” if you’re using Google Assistant to send text messages or calls.

This tiny trick allows us to be more than someone’s mom or dad, damn it. (I say this while bringing my child more water at her request.)
