How to Use Tinder’s New Security Features for LGBTQ + Travelers
Dating apps are great for communicating while traveling , but they can also pose a significant security risk. That’s why Tinder is launching a new Traveler Alert feature, which was developed in partnership with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association ( ILGA ) to protect LGBTQ + users in countries and regions that criminalize same-sex relationships.
International travelers obey the laws of the country they are visiting, even if the laws are intolerant and regressive. The sad reality is that many governments openly repress – often to the point of violence – against the LGBTQ + community. While Tinder’s Traveler Alert app is an annoying form of self-censorship, it is designed to help users stay safe.
How Tinder Traveler Alert works
If Tinder learns that an LGBTQ + user is in one of 69 countries where same-sex relationships are persecuted , or if the user tries to use Tinder Passport to match people living in one of those countries, Tinder alerts them to a potential security risk and give the user the option to temporarily hide their profile.
If you still choose to display your profile publicly, Tinder will automatically hide your gender and sexual orientation on your profile. After you physically leave the country, your complete profile information will again be publicly available.
Tinder has also updated its dating safety tips with additional privacy suggestions and more information about Traveler Alert. As the company describes:
“It’s important to take extra care if you choose to connect with new people in these countries, as some law enforcement agencies are known to use dating apps as potential trap tools. Several countries have also recently introduced laws that criminalize human-to-person communication on same-sex dating apps or websites, and even increase penalties if such communication leads to sexual contact.
Visit ILGA World to learn about the latest sexual orientation laws by country and consider making a donation to support their research. ”
We also have our own tips for keeping your privacy when using dating apps , because everyone is worthy to connect and find love – through the app or otherwise .
