To Go to Bed Earlier, Take More Breaks During the Day.
This may sound a little counterintuitive. Of course, you want to go to bed early to feel refreshed in the morning. Maybe you have been planning to postpone bedtime for several months (years!), But hurry from this to the next all day. If you take more breaks during the day than usual, you will have to go to bed even later to finish everything that needs to be done, right?
Sociologist and writer Christine Carter writes for Greater Good Magazine that we were all wrong. When asked by a reader who wants to go to bed early but says that evening hours are their desired “time for me” (like Netflix and mindless scrolling on social media), Carter says that in order to get rid of the need to relax at night, we need to relax periodically during the day.
Understand your beliefs about what leads to productivity and concentration. I can tell you with confidence that never resting or taking breaks during the day will not help you do your best work, do a lot, or stay focused when you need to.
Numerous studies have shown that even short breaks significantly improve our productivity and productivity. When we don’t take breaks, our focus and the quality of our work usually suffer. But when we rest during the day, we can work much longer without suffering from the quality of our work or our focus.
Part of our problem is that we equate busy with important, ”says Carter, who wrote The Middle Way: How To Get More With Less . Many of us believe that being busy is a sign of strength and character, and over time it becomes a habit. But if we can change that belief – that being busy equates to success – then we can afford more breaks. And during the day, these breaks can help us relax so that before bed, we don’t feel like we didn’t have a second for ourselves all day.
The breaks don’t have to be extreme. Get out of the office for lunch instead of eating at your desk. Take a walk between appointments. Read the book for 15 minutes when you get home before you start dinner. Take back small moments and distribute them throughout the day.
Then go to bed.
