How to Downgrade From IOS 13 Beta to IOS 12

The first beta of iOS 13 is aimed at developers (and more cunning Apple fans who like living on the edge), but it’s not all fun and games. While there are some exciting new features that beta testers can try out if they install iOS 13 right now, the operating system is still pending and Apple has a few more months of testing before iOS 13 is ready for general release.

If you’ve made an early transition to the iOS 13 beta and feel a little regret about the update, don’t worry. You can roll back iOS to the comfort and stability level of iOS 12 – at least until a public beta comes out next month, which should be slightly more stable than the first developer beta.

Download the required system files

First, find and download your device’s .IPSW file from https://ipsw.me/ . You can use the Detect My iOS Device tool from the right sidebar menu, or search by the model name of your iPhone or iPad (for example, iPhone X, iPad Pro, iPhone 8s, etc.). Save the iOS 12.3, 12.3.1, or 12.3.2 .IPSW file to your computer. While it is loading, this is a good opportunity to make sure you have iTunes installed if you are rolling back on your Windows PC.

Setting up your iOS device

Don’t worry about backing up your device before downgrading. While it is usually good practice when upgrading to a newer version of iOS, you cannot perform a restore in iOS 12 with an iOS 13 backup. (One of the reasons we always recommend doing an offline iTunes-based backup of your old iOS version. if you want to install the beta.)

You also need to disable the Find My iPhone / iPad option in iOS 13. This may seem like a weird step, but you need to disable it so that this feature doesn’t throw errors during rollback.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your account name at the top of the settings window, then go to Find> Find iPhone / iPad and tap the Find iPhone / iPad slider to turn it off.
  3. Enter your Apple ID and password to apply the changes.

Installing older versions of iOS

After you have disabled the Find My Device option and the .IPSW file has finished downloading, you can start rolling back.

  1. Connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC. iTunes should launch automatically.
  2. In the sidebar, click the iPhone icon under Devices to open the device summary screen.
  3. Hold down the Option key on your Mac, or the Shift key if you’re on Windows, and click Restore iPhone.
  4. In the file browser that opens, locate and open the previously downloaded IPSW file.
  5. A pop-up window will appear informing you that you are installing a new version of iOS. Click “Restore”.
  6. Wait for the process to go. During the installation process, you may be asked to enter your device password. Installation is complete when the device reboots and the Welcome screen appears.
  7. If you backed up your phone while running iOS 12 and want to restore your data, click “Restore from iCloud” or “Restore from iTunes Backup.” If not, click “Set as New iPhone”. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup and recovery.

Once these steps are completed, your device is now safe again in the gentle and stable embrace of iOS 12.
