Always Look at Your Pay Slip
In this convenient era of direct deposit, do you look at your paycheck every time payday comes? Are you sure the hours worked is what you are actually being paid for?
Reddit user TheCabin7Gryffindor recently posted this tip : “If you work hourly, don’t trust your employer to keep track of your hours. Keep track of how many hours you work in each pay period to make sure you get paid for the hours you worked. ”
Tons of people intervened, recalling times when their boss took their breaks and their hours worked less; where executives will guess their hours while maintaining the payroll, rather than checking it; and cases where their salaries simply did not match the number of hours worked.
This is where it is important to keep your own time log to make sure you are getting paid. Digital time attendance systems can malfunction, manual journaling is not reliable ( correct the handwriting ), and unfortunately not every boss is as scrupulous as one might hope.
At its best, the discrepancy between your own magazine and what you have on your paycheck is a simple mistake that can be quickly fixed.
Worst-case scenario: You are working in real hell where timesheets are drawn up by terrible bosses. (Do you think I’m kidding? This story about senior caregivers will make you rush to check your latest pay slip.)
So we have two tiny little tricks combined into one very important reminder.
First, don’t expect your employer’s time tracking system to correctly record your hours worked every time. Keep your own journal, which can be easily referenced when needed. Keep this journal on your home computer or laptop that you keep at home to be more confident that your journal will not be altered.
Secondly – and this goes for salaried workers as well – don’t just look through your digital or physical payday payroll when you’re looking for that magic number (obviously your paycheck), check the hours worked, deductions on taxes and benefits, and other designations such as accumulated vacation time. The more familiar you are with what is normal for your paycheck, the better equipped you will be to spot inaccuracies should they arise.
