Avocado Will Get More Expensive If Trump Taxes Mexican Imports
President Trump announced a 5% tariff on imports from Mexico starting June 10, rising to 25% as needed until “illegal migrants arriving through Mexico” stop moving, he said on Twitter.
In a statement on the White House website, Trump also clarified that the tariffs will be handed over to you under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which is a separate ball of wax from the tensions he has with China .
Our southern neighbor shipped $ 346.5 billion worth of goods last year alone, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative, while imports from Mexico accounted for 13.6% of total US imports.
Here are some notable categories that could get more expensive if this tariff takes effect:
- Vehicles
- Electrical equipment
- Mineral fuel
- Optical and medical instruments
- Fresh vegetables
- Fresh fruits
- Processed fruits and vegetables
- Wine and beer
- Snacks
Like Chinese tariffs, this added value is primarily passed on to the business – and therefore to the end user. Here’s what to expect if the Trump threat becomes a reality:
