Test Your Typing Speed in 54 Languages at 10FastFingers

Oh boy, I just increased my heart rate by typing. At 10FastFingers you can test your typing speed in most major and European languages, compare yourself to other typists in your language, and compete in real time (but only in English).

Just like the famous Typeracer site, 10FastFingers randomly matches you up with other typists, and you can watch as everyone picks up the same piece. But unlike Typeracer, which uses excerpts from books, 10FastFingers uses apparently random strings of common words. This will likely slow down your typing as you cannot mentally concatenate words into larger chunks to type in long bursts.

If you want to type real passages instead of random words, you can insert your own document to practice . So you can grab a book fromProject Gutenberg and practice typing with Pride and Prejudice . You can also enter your own word list and the site will randomly select it for you. It will even repeat words, so you can type as many words as possible in a given amount of time.

There are advantages to typing random words. Because they don’t mean anything, they don’t distract. It won’t improve your typing speed, but if you’re fast enough (say 70 wpm or more), you may find the test relaxing, even meditative. You can get hooked. And if you switch to a real writing assignment after that, you may find yourself typing faster – it feels like a strange feeling when you start walking after cycling.
