Get Discounted Lyft Rides to the Grocery Store If You Live in the Food Desert
Many of us take it for granted to have a grocery store next door. For many Americans, however, this trip to the grocery store is a significant journey that is made even more significant by the cost of getting there. Lyft is now offering people living in food deserts discounts on trips to grocery stores in cities across the US and Canada to make their trip more convenient.
The deal is not available to everyone in a particular area, The Verge notes . Instead, Lyft allows local partners, including food banks and farmers’ markets, to determine who is eligible for a community deal. The general idea is that you will most likely be living in a food desert and may receive food stamps to qualify.
Last year, the company tested a program in Washington, DC, allowing families in Ward 7 and 8 of the city to travel to and from the grocery store for $ 2.50. This program required the family to have children assigned to several specific elementary schools that worked with the nonprofit Martha’s Table.
Lyft is currently rolling out the program to:
- COLUMBIA REGION
- Atlanta
- Atlantic City
- Baltimore
- Chicago
- Columbus
- Detroit
- Indianapolis
- Los Angeles
- Miami
- Ottawa
- Philadelphia
- Phoenix
- Portland
- Richmond
- Toronto
Rides will cost an average of $ 2.50, but will vary depending on location. Drivers will be paid the regular fare and Lyft will cover the additional costs.
Interested residents of the cities I mentioned above can learn more about the service on the Lyft website.
