Block Spoilers for Avengers, Game of Thrones and Star Wars With These Tools

This is a tough week for a fan unless you enjoy watching the characters you’ve loved for years, if not decades, bite big. Be sure to bring your Mjolnir-sized box of napkins to Avengers: Endgame this week (especially if you, like me, have Thanos as # 1. While he’s unlikely to get Ant-Man in his ass , why I suspect this is everyone’s favorite nihilist. Won’t get through this film.)

Oh, and Game of Thrones . Let the odds always be in your favor for the “deadpool” game that you play with your friends or colleagues; you are probably going to cross out a lot of squares on your bingo card in the Sunday edition.

Of course, nothing can spoil the fun of these huge franchises faster than stumbling upon a spoiler for a movie, episode, or your favorite character before you see what happens. While the easiest way to prevent all of this is to not go online this week, this is impractical for most. However, you have several ways to fight back spoilers.

Take a break from your obsessive fan communities

That Game of Thrones subreddit you read every day? The huge Star Wars Facebook group that’s constantly blowing up your news feed? Is your Discord channel all about the Avengers ? Consider leaving the group (or service) as you get closer to debuting what you are waiting for. You can always join later.

You will know when it’s time to take a breather, especially if you notice that your favorite show or movie has been announced in the press, if that show or movie has already debuted to the masses, or if you start to see news reports that leaks and spoilers are emerging. The best way to avoid them is to not hang out where they might be posted (before a moderator can remove them).

Disable a lot of words and phrases on Twitter

Twitter is also one of the worst places to catch a spoiler from the road. However, Twitter has a great system that you can use to fix this problem before it ruins your movie: mute.

Liftthis page up; Upload your favorite movie, TV show, video game, or whatever to Wikipedia; and stretch your fingers well. This is because you will want to enter any names, authors, locations, storylines, or other keywords that may appear in the spoiler. How crazy and thorough you want to become is entirely up to you – and I’m sorry if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, as there are so many characters and houses to turn off – but the more you keep quiet, the less likely you are. ” will be spoiled by details you didn’t want to know about.

If you want to engage in a lively discussion after watching a show or movie, you can always set the mute duration to 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days instead of forever.

If you are popular on Twitter or are regularly harassed, you can also turn off notifications for different types of people (for example, for those who do not follow you). Better yet, turn off the ability to receive spoilers from anyone and don’t let anyone tag you in HAN DIES photos.

If you are well known on some social platform – be it Twitter, Facebook, PlayStation, or whatever – you may want to turn off messaging, notifications, chat, or anything else you can do to prevent people from hitting you. spoilers you don’t want to see. There is a cruel world.

Clear YouTube history

While it is quite easy to avoid the “SPOILERS: [show name]” YouTube videos, it’s more difficult when you watch your favorite clips from old episodes and see a similar video that has a spoiler right in the title of the video. Here’s a spoiler: people who do this are assholes.

I’ll move on to more advanced methods you can use to clean up your YouTube channel, but one quick and easy trick is to delete the history of all the videos you’ve watched. This will help prevent YouTube from showing “similar” videos that you might not want to know about.

To delete your browsing history, visit this website and click the “Filter by Date and Product” button at the top.

Deselect everything except YouTube and then click on the blue magnifying glass. Once your YouTube browsing history is full, click the three-dot icon to the right of the search bar and select “Remove Results.” Click “Delete” in the pop-up window.

Delete your subreddits (for now)

If you’re a big Reddit user, you’re in a spoiler minefield (depending on how good your subreddit moderators are). However, you don’t need to unsubscribe en masse to avoid spoilers; you can still maintain your membership in these communities and come back when you see fit to participate in the panel discussion. Instead, I recommend removing spoiler-filled subreddits from your front page feed.

To do this, you first need to install the always useful Reddit Enhancement Suite extension for Chrome or Firefox . Open Reddit with the extension enabled, click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and click on RES Settings Console to load the Reddit Enhancement Suite configuration screen. Click the Subreddits link in the left sidebar and click filteReddit.

From this config screen, you can filter out certain words from Reddit – hide any posts that have those specific keywords in the header – to help you manage spoilers, just like you did for Twitter. You can also hide the subreddits themselves, either on the entire Reddit site, or only on the / r / all, / r / popular and domain pages.

Use browser extensions to avoid spoilers

If you need more help to create the most spoiler-free web experience possible, there are some great browser extensions to consider. BlockTube for Chrome and Firefox lets you hide comments from annoying YouTube users or more importantly by keywords – perfect for blocking a spoiler-filled chat if you don’t mind populating that keyword list. You can also block videos based on the words that appear in their titles, so watching DART VADER – LUCK’S FATHER as a linked video won’t ruin your day. Finally, the extension can block the entire YouTube Trending page as well as any auto-generated playlists generated by the service.

You can also use the Youtube VK FacebookRemove Recommendations” Chrome extension , which does exactly that – removes all recommended videos so that you don’t get spoiled by what you didn’t want to see (including titles). For Firefox, try removing Youtube suggestions .

Since browser extensions will not work in your mobile browser (or app), you can log out of YouTube on your smartphone or not use it at all until you watch a TV show or movie.

If you are passionate about Twitch, be sure to use an extension BetterTTV, to block certain keywords in the chat, in case you trolls try to spoil something there. You can also try to block whispers from people you don’t know through your Twitch settings, but chances are good you won’t get spoilers if you’re hiding in the stream.

If you want to focus your efforts on a lot more websites than YouTube, try Spoiler Protection 2.0 for Chrome and Firefox .

As before, you’ll be adding keywords from your favorite fanatical franchises that you don’t want to be mentioned online. The beauty of the expansion is that it’s a spoiler bomb. Rather than wiping out that word in a sea of text, Spoiler Protection 2.0 protects you from entire paragraphs and, in some cases, articles. It’s a little cumbersome, but it’s the best way to escape secrets.
