Use These Two Types of Amaro With Dark Perfume

I don’t mind just sipping an amaro or five as they are usually so fragrant they don’t need much. I also love them with a little soda. But my amaro-centric worldview sometimes makes me forget that these sweet and herbal little numbers are great for full-bodied cocktails, especially those made with darker spirits.

We used to use amaro in Manhattan , but left some vermouth there and it was good, so you can imagine my disappointment when I realized I was out of vermouth. I looked around my collection of bottles to see if one of my cherished amari could intervene, and – seeing that cardamar-flavored cardamaro is actually based on wine (like vermouth), I settled on that.

Then I realized that I was out of rye. It upset me, but not for long, because I had a dark rum. I’m not sure what I would call this collection of dark alcoholic elixirs other than “very tasty.” It is very strong, comfortable and very aromatic. To make it yourself, you will need:

  • 1 3/4 ounce dark rum
  • 3/4 ounce cardamaro
  • 1/2 ounce cinar

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until cool. Strain into a glass compartment. If you want to add the fourth ingredient as a garnish, use a strip of lemon zest.
