How to Make Easter Egg Hunting More Accessible for Kids of All Skill Levels

Easter egg hunt is the best. Initial dizziness. The thrill of the quest. The satisfaction that brings results after the hunt (“38 eggs! Hurray! “). It is a tradition in which every child, regardless of ability, should be able to participate.

Here’s how to make Easter egg hunting more accessible.

Tie balloons to eggs

We love this idea shared on Facebook by the miracle of Noah . By tying a helium-filled balloon to each egg, children with disabilities can participate in the hunt while remaining in wheelchairs, walking machines, and walkers. (Bonus: this ensures that all the eggs in your yard are found – no one wants to find the remains of melted chocolate from a cracked plastic egg four months after Easter.)

Stick the eggs on the wall

Another modification for children with disabilities is to organize an egg hunt along an open wall. This is what Julie Jones of Have Wheelchair Will Travel did for her kids.

Use duct tape or other non-damaging glue to position the plastic eggs at a child-friendly height. (The eggs, of course, can’t be too heavy – you can put stickers or temporary tattoos on them, or let the hunters trade empty eggs for a toy at the end.) Or if you don’t have an open wall. , you can arrange a path of chairs or stools and lay eggs on them.

Add magnets to eggs

More and more communities are organizing magnetic egg hunts, where children who find it difficult to reach the ground are given magnetic poles to collect magnetic eggs. You can create such a hunt yourself using small magnets and a glue gun. (Be sure to supervise young children during this activity as it is extremely dangerous to swallow a magnet.)

Make an egg beep

For visually impaired children, eggs can make noise. There are instructions online for assembling an egg like this one for a dad named David Hyche or it’s one of the Instructables. (You can also buy edible eggs on Amazon, although they are quite expensive.) Visually impaired children can also hunt – just wear a blindfold. At the end of the hunt, the participants can exchange their eggs for a prize, and you can use the eggs year after year.

Assign a color to each child

An easy way to level the egg hunting field for kids of all ages and abilities is to assign each kid a color. Thus, each child can last as long as he needs without being trampled, in the style of the Lord of the Flies . Happy hunting kids!
