Upgrade Your Fios Gateway G1100 Router Now to Eliminate Severe Security Risks
Verizon Gateway G1100 routers may be at risk of being compromised due to serious vulnerabilities present in older firmware versions. The easiest way to explain these security risks is that they made it easy to intercept login credentials and gain remote access to the router. If you are interested in a more detailed and technical explanation of the risks and potential omissions, check out this analysis by Tenable , the company that originally discovered the exploits.
For Verizon customers who are worried about their devices, Verizon has released firmware update 02.02.00.13 that addresses the vulnerabilities. This update hasn’t been released to all users yet, but we’ll show you how to check your router’s firmware and how to force an update if you need it.
Find the firmware of your Fios Gateway G1100
Vulnerabilities are present on Gateway G1100 routers with firmware earlier than 02.02.00.13 (for example, 2.01). To check the firmware version:
- Open ” http://myfiosgateway.com/ “.
- Enter your administrator name and password. The default name is “admin” and your password is on a sticker on your device.
- After logging in, you will find your firmware number listed on the System Monitor tab.
If your device does not have version 02.02.00.13 installed, there are several ways to force the update.
The easiest way to initiate a firmware update is to reboot your device.
- Just press and hold the WPS button located on the front of the router for 10 seconds to reboot it.
- After restarting and reconnecting to the Verizon network, it should receive and install the firmware.
Another method is to use the url to send the update request.
- In your web browser, open: https://192.168.1.1/#/advanced/fwupgrade
- Log in using “admin” and the password printed on your router.
- Follow the instructions on the screen
Regardless of how you enable the update, make sure it actually works by checking the firmware version as described above. If your router has n’t updated after trying these update methods, consider contacting Verizon directly to see if they can force the update on their side.
