How to See the Northern Lights in the USA This Weekend

If you’re in New York or Chicago this weekend, you might get a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

This was due to a geomagnetic storm expected in the area on Saturday. Typically, geomagnetic storms create solar winds, which cause gas particles in the Earth’s atmosphere to emit light when struck. On Saturday, this storm of geoagents will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is a collection of charged particles from a layer of gas that surrounds the sun, according to The Points Guy .

Scientists don’t know how severe the storm will be, and that strength will have a lot to do with where you can see the northern lights.

As for where you can see them tonight, the answer is especially northern areas like Michigan, Wisconsin and Maine. If the storm is severe, the lights could also see Chicago and New York. Canada, Scandinavia and parts of northern Great Britain and Ireland can also see lights.
