How to Automate Parenting With IFTTT
IFTTT , a tool that automates your digital life, can help any parent whose mental workload has reached its limit – and every time you use it, you feel like a tech wizard. Here are some great IFTTT applets that can make parenting easier. (If you’re new to this service, check out our beginner’s guide to get the basics right.)
Start streaming live at home after school so you know your kids have arrived safely
You can see if they brought a friend (or five) home. Usage: date and time, much more
Send text messages about children’s calendar events to the second parent
When you use the word “kids” in a calendar event, text with the event URL will be sent to your spouse, second parent, ex, nanny, or someone else of your choice. This gives them additional information that helps if they are not the type to constantly check the shared calendar. Usage: Google Calendar, Android SMS.
Turn on the light when mom or dad is almost home
After work, when you exit the freeway and approach your home, the applet will flash the Philips lights. Your kids will squeal with excitement or may try to put off a game they shouldn’t have played.
Usage: Location, Philips Hue
Color in the light loops when it’s time to get ready for bed
It’s hard to agree on just five minutes of Mario Kart when the lights say it’s time to start your nightly routine.
Usage: Date and Time, Philips Hue
Keep track of the deadlines for your child’s big projects
Just enter “Report the world’s worst mistakes on April 10” and the event will appear on your calendar. Usage: Notes Widget, Google Calendar
Get a message if your child ever calls 911
If your child calls 911 for any reason, you will know immediately.
Usage: Android phone call, Android SMS
Send a message to your child when your BMW is near their school
They will know to prepare and meet you at the designated location.
Usage: BMW Labs, Android SMS.
Unplug your phone before bed
Your fast-asleep children will never again be accidentally woken up by your ringtone “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard …”.
Usage: Date and time, Android device.
Think about places to return with your family later.
When you come across a neat park, museum, or hike and think, “I have to bring the kids here one day,” email yourself a photo and location. Then, on the days when you need to get out of here, you will know where to look for ideas.
Usage: camera widget, email
