Having Problems Playing on Your PC? Update Windows 10
If you’ve noticed that some of your Windows 10 games have been unresponsive in the past week, you’re not alone. Microsoft has confirmed that a recent update to Windows 10, patch KB4482887 , introduced a bug that dramatically increased the latency. But don’t worry. Fortunately, the Microsoft quickly decided to issue a new patch KB4489899 , which reportedly fixes the problem.
According to posts on Reddit and YouTube such asJoker Productions , the patch causes “huge” input lag whenever you use your mouse in games like Apex Legends , Destiny 2, and some older Call of Dutytitles. Considering that most of the games affected are first person shooters that require twitching reflexes and very precise mouse action, the issue seems to make these games virtually unplayable.
The bug does not affect all games, and you would know if you saw it, so if this is news to you, there is no cause for concern. However, it is probably a good idea to make sure you are using the most recent version of Windows 10 before you start anything.
To check your Windows build, go to Settings and click About. You are looking for the OS Build number, which will be on the right side of the window. The new OS build – the one you want to see – is version 17763.379. Be sure to update if you see any other number; especially OS Build 17763.348 which corresponds to the patch causing the lag.
If your computer has not yet been updated, or has been configured to manually update only on demand, you can update it by going to Settings, then Update and Security, and then Windows Update. Windows should automatically check for updates when you open the menu, but there is also an update button for asking for a search. If you prefer to find their own update, you can also go to the Microsoft Update catalog , and perform search « KB4489899 », to download it manually.
