Choose an Avocado by Shape

As a millennial, I’m financially ruined by avocados. I can’t stop smearing them on any edible surface – and they’re damn expensive! That’s why this little tip on how to get as much avocado meat as possible for your money is so interesting.

Posted on r / LifeProTips by u / passivefiness , this trick is based on the assumption that you are not buying an avocado for the bone ; obviously the big round avocados that look so good in the grocery aisle open up to reveal that they are mostly giant seeds inside. You need a good oblong oil:

The rounder the avocado, the larger the pit. For best results, use oval.

Commentators joked that u / passivefiness was trying to trick everyone into buying the worst avocados, but apparently that’s legal.

In 2016, Oregon Live posted a post that a local reader named Stephen Keil (this person knows what foods are) wrote to explain the technique for identifying seeds . They decided to test Kahle’s theory and found that it was mostly correct:

In three different comparisons of avocados of the same weight but different shapes, the longer pear-shaped avocados had smaller seeds than the more rounded ones. For example, we opened two six-ounce Hass avocados, and the seed from the longer avocado weighed 1 ounce, and the seed from the rounded one weighed 1-1 / 2 ounce.

The 1/2 ounce difference may seem inconsequential, but when you consider that you’ll need two to four avocados to make guacamole, the difference in yield starts to add up.

The caveat is that seed size cannot be guaranteed in every case: you can still pick the perfect oval and end up with an absurdly large hole inside. Let’s hope not, because I need to fill the bowl with guacamole.
