Save the Last Moments of the Citrus Season With This Cocktail

The grocery store is an inspiring place, especially the grocery line. Whatever I have on my list, I make sure to take a few minutes to leisurely browse through fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms, just to see if someone comes along to say hello. This week I stumbled upon a big sunny yellow boi that I just called “cocktail citrus.” My mission was clear.

A citrus cocktail, also known as mandelo , is a cross between tangerine and pomelo, and tastes like the sweet, more affordable grapefruit. You can eat deliciously from it, but you cannot call something a “citrus cocktail” and expect that I will not combine its juice with a drink. Considering the grapefruit properties of this fruit, I decided to do a small deal with the Italian greyhound and it was a good decision. It was refreshing and luscious, yet tough – the perfect antidote to those last cold winter days. To make it yourself, you will need:

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 30g freshly squeezed citrus cocktail juice (a less sweet grapefruit, which you might find if your grocery doesn’t have citrus cocktail fruits)
  • 3/4 oz Campari

Mix everything in an iced cocktail shaker and shake as vigorously as possible for about 15 seconds. Strain into a glass compartment and enjoy.
