We Reject All Gimmicks Associated With Drinking Water
Telling people to drink more water is a lazy and mostly useless health trick. You will drink when you are thirsty. Why complicate things?
I could end the post on that, but for some reason there are list after list after list of hydration hacks. Ways to force yourself to drink more water. (We’ve even published one or two .) From their point of view, it’s very important to get more water in your life. More than that. No, not even more. Drink this.
But we hydrate all the time. You are dead? Not? Then you are probably doing well . Here are some specific tricks that I reject:
- Drink X glasses of water a day : Or you can just drink when you feel thirsty.
- Track water consumption using the app : see above.
- Urine color analysis : Your urine reflects what your body is trying to get rid of, not what is actually in your body right now .
- Coffee or other hydrating drinks aside: Caffeine has a tiny dehydrating effect if you’re not used to it. Which still doesn’t matter, because drinks like coffee are still made from water .
- Forget about the fact that food contains water : if you do not eat a strict diet of jerky and raisins, drinks are not the only source of water.
- Throwing fruits in water to make them prettier and more appetizing: they rarely taste the same as they look, and it’s a waste of (usually expensive) fruit that you could eat instead.
- Drink a glass of lemon water every morning : only if you really love lemon water . The rest will stick to coffee.
- Smart water bottles that tell you when to drink: Come on. Seriously ?
Water is a great drink and a great substitute for sugary drinks like soda. But as long as some liquid gets into your body, you will be fine.
