How to Tidy up Your Office Desk
People with office work spend most of their waking hours sitting at a desk likely chosen for its utilitarian qualities. While you’re there, why not make this place more enjoyable?
An office can be turned into a cozy, pleasant and cheerful space, even if you have to stack colorful decorations on each surface. Or just a few accents, if that suits you better. Tastes vary greatly, as Redditor u / Caddap found out when they asked Reddit, “What little things have you added for those with office jobs to make their desk a little more enjoyable? “
Pictures and light
Photos of friends and family can always be a good reminder of who you’ll see when you finally get out of the day, but some people have used the images in a more creative way, like u /mountaindynamic :
My desk is up against a wall in a windowless office, so I printed and hung up a window overlooking the garden. You would be surprised to know that this really helps.
It is not uncommon to solve the problem of missing windows; and you can make it even more efficient like u / alittlehygge :
I do the same and I have a sun lantern. I even caught myself leaving the zone when I look out my “window” when I think. It helps a lot in the absence of windows.
Lamps have generally been popular as a way to make spaces feel more welcoming; If it’s not real sunlight, then you can turn on one that isn’t as harsh as the overhead and creates a much nicer work environment.
Memories
Many said they collect souvenirs, for example u / cascua , for whom this is part of the job:
My team and I travel a lot for work, so every time we travel to a new country, we give each other souvenirs. My table is a jumble of souvenirs from all over the world.
Seeing nothing to someone may be a reminder of a pleasant experience you’ve had or hope to repeat. If you are traveling, pick up something nice to remember; then when you are at work, you can remind yourself that you are a fearless adventurer as well as an office jockey.
Plants
If you have a window, the plant will always be a fun addition. This is another living being that needs to be developed. Maybe you don’t consider yourself a plant person, but read u / GlockTheDoor’s description of your table companion and get inspired:
I have been growing African violet from unifolia for the past 4 years! He now has 4 separate crowns and is great!
Redditor u / dskentucky turned their factory into a shared office:
I have a jade factory that I won at a church carnival a few years ago. I transplanted it into a large pot and when the leaves fall off we will root them in the same pot. When they start to develop on their own, they are open to being accepted by the team. I can imagine that in fifty years there will be members of the jade plant family all over the office.
Bring some greenery to the plant friend room – and if you really have room, you can do the same as u / 1kSuns and get a fish:
Aquarium. 9 gallon cube tank with betta inside. He’s my buddy and we both hate my boss.
And the pet in the office sounds great. While he lives.
Tiny carpet
It wasn’t on Reddit, but a survey of Lifehacker staff revealed that two people had tiny rugs, which made the table suddenly look very cozy:
Other items on the Lifehacker desktop included dry hand lotions, cuddly tea, a miniature marquee, a troll doll, crystals, and a child-made sculpture worthy of a full description:
It’s a human drop and a dinosaur drop, and the dinosaur kind of melted, so it looks very sad. So, he hugged the person around the dinosaur and drew labels on the piece of paper underneath: the person is him, the dinosaur is me, so now he portrays him cheering me on when I feel bad, PLUS every time I look at it. I can imagine myself as a dinosaur.
Anything that makes your heart sing – or at least helps you get through the day.
