Latest Android 9 Security Update Includes Useful Feature Fixes for Pixel Phones
On Tuesday, Google released patch notes for the upcoming December Android security update, which will roll out to all Android devices from today. These monthly updates usually address potential vulnerabilities for devices running Android 9, but this month’s update includes specific fixes for Pixel phones in addition to the usual security updates. Patches include improved camera performance, fixes for screen flickering and apps that accidentally close when running in the background, and a number of others.
While most of the fixes are for Pixel 3 devices, some of them apply to previous Pixel models as well, so you’ll want to apply the update as soon as it’s available to take advantage of the benefits. Here’s a rundown of all the changes coming to Pixel phones in the December Android 9 security update:
Improved RAM performance and fixed background apps closing.
Some Pixel 2 and 3 users have found that their phones are closing apps running in the background prematurely, but this new update is reportedly fixing that. Google calls this change “improved memory performance under certain circumstances” for all Pixel 2, 2XL, 3 and 3XL phones, which will update the RAM management on those phones specifically to prevent unwanted application closings.
Fix ambient display flickering
Another patch for the highlight feature for the December security update aims to prevent screen flickering that occurs on the lock screen of Pixel 3 devices, which Google calls “improved Always On Display response.”
Best camera performance
Google is touting improved camera capture performance for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3, which is also part of the RAM management fix. Pixel 3 users can also look forward to redesigned autofocus behavior and improved shutter performance after installing the update.
Improvements to multimedia and Bluetooth
There are several changes being made to various multimedia apps and features across the Pixel phone line. First, Google has adjusted the volume behavior when connected to a Bluetooth device, which applies to all Pixel phones. Additionally, owners of models from the original Pixel or Pixel 2 lineup should see a faster response to unlocking their phone when connected via Bluetooth.
In terms of media updates for the Pixel 3, Google says users can expect “improved HDR contouring” when using the Pixel 3’s media apps, as well as better detection when you plug in an audio device via USB-C.
Pixel Stand Updates
Pixel 3 owners who have purchased a Pixel Stand accessory for their Google Home will be pleased to hear that Google has “improved the visibility of notifications” while your phone is attached to the stand (though the post is unclear exactly what those improvements are). You should also notice the better recognition and performance of Hotword.
Android Auto performance
Finally, the last two patches of the December security update relate to Android Auto features that expand and improve compatibility for Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 devices, and also bring general improvements to the Pixel 3 audio performance for select vehicles when using Android Auto.
How to download the December Android 9 security update
As mentioned above, updates and fixes for all applicable features will be rolled out to all Android devices starting today, December 5th. You will receive a notification about a system update when it becomes available and after that all you have to do is start the update.
However, Google is also releasing OTAs and factory images for all of its updates, and the December update is currently available for those who prefer to manually install OS updates on their devices.
