Roast Turkey in a Lazy Way With a Bluetooth Thermometer
Want a truly relaxing Thanksgiving? Try this: Put the turkey in the oven, then watch TV for a few hours. When people start saying, “Shouldn’t you check out the turkey?” just take your phone out of your pocket and tell them the exact temperature.
This is the magic of a Bluetooth thermometer. I use the iGrill Mini (about $ 40), the same model our own Claire Lower uses in this video on how to cook the perfect turkey. At the end of the long wire, there is a metal probe attached to a small device the size of a chicken nugget. Place the probe like any thermometer: in the thickest part of your thigh, near where it touches your body . Make sure it doesn’t touch the bone.
Then place the nugget next to the stove. (Or glue it straight — it’s magnetic.) The nugget will glow yellow, then orange, and then red when the turkey reaches its final temperature. Connect it to your phone and you can watch the turkey cooking from afar.
Telling the app what kind of meat you are cooking (it also makes steaks of any degree of doneness!), You will see a graph of the temperature, starting with a drop, when the room temperature sensor goes to the turkey temperature set in the refrigerator. You will receive a notification when the turkey is almost done, so sit back and relax until it’s time to prepare the side dishes.
