Spotify Users With Free Accounts Can Now Use Their Devices As a Remote Control
The free version of Spotify just got better. The music streaming service has expanded Spotify Connect, a feature that lets you control music on compatible speakers across phones, laptops, and other devices over Wi-Fi to free accounts. Prior to this change, free subscribers could only connect to smart speakers via Bluetooth, which generally provides a clearer connection. (Sorry. I had to).
However, access to this new feature can be a bit slow. The new support requires speaker manufacturers to update their products to the latest Spotify SDK . The developers have had access to the change since September, so it is possible that all speakers have been updated, but such maintenance is optional, so we don’t know for sure.
For your part, be sure to update the Spotify app on your devices. You can also check if your speakers are Connect compatible on the Spotify gear page .
From there, it’s very easy to connect your phone to your speakers via Spotify. If you need help, check out the video below for some quick instructions.
