How to Disable Automatic Login to Chrome in Version 70
Google has definitely received a message that users are unhappy with the auto login / logout link implemented in the previous version of Chrome. The company has released an updated version of the browser (version 70) that, among other changes, makes it much easier to disable this annoying feature.
Back in Chrome 69, the browser automatically logged in or out when they logged in or out of Google web services – Gmail, YouTube, etc. This feature was annoying, but more importantly, it made a number of users worry about their privacy, fearing that their data will now automatically sync with Google’s servers without their explicit permission. While these concerns were ultimately unfounded, the feature raised questions about Google’s privacy and business practices that have already been scrutinized.
But now there is Chrome 70, which not only lets you opt out of auto sign-in (more on that in a moment), but is also more transparent about whether Google Sync is enabled. it warns users more clearly that they are on an insecure HTTP website rather than HTTPS. and provides more control over browser extensions and their permissions. The update also fixes at least 23 unique security bugs in older versions of Chrome.
In addition to these privacy and security changes, Chrome 70 also adds new features to Chrome, such as support for progressive web apps, support for the AV1 video codecs, and new developer tools. You can read the full changelog for Chrome 70 to see all the changes .
Turn off Chrome’s auto sign-in feature
Despite these long-awaited changes in Chrome 70, the aforementioned auto-login feature is enabled by default in the browser. Fortunately, giving up is easy.
First, upgrade your browser to Chrome 70. Click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of your browser, click Help, and then click About Google Chrome. If you don’t already have it, the browser should automatically check for updates and prompt you to restart Chrome to install the latest version. Then click on those three vertical dots again and select ” Settings”.
On the Settings screen, scroll down to the Advanced section and click the arrow to open Chrome Advanced Settings. You should see the Allow sign in to Chrome option. Click the slider icon to turn it off (the slider should be gray on the left).
That’s all there is to it. Disabling auto login linking is easier in Chrome 70 than in Chrome 69 , but it’s still annoying that Google insists that this is the default behavior for Chrome. However, we hope that this is an indicator that Google knows that it needs to provide a clearer explanation of the changes it is making to its products and services and provide the ability to easily opt out of unwanted features.
